ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Law enforcement officials said they’re looking for a pickup truck driver who attempted to abduct a 9-year-old girl Monday.

The incident happened in the 6900 block of Sebastian Road in the Lakewood Park area in the northern part of the county, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said. The girl told deputies she was riding her bicycle about 3 p.m. Monday when the driver pulled up beside her in a light blue pickup.

“The man tried to force the girl into his truck,” Sheriff Ken Mascara said.

The suspect grabbed the girl by the hair and ordered her to get inside, she told deputies. However, she was able to break free and run to a friend’s home, the Sheriff’s Office said. Family members called authorities about the abduction attempt immediately, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The girl described the suspect as a 20- to 30-year-old man with medium-length blond hair. Detectives investigated the abduction attempt for a couple of days before making a public appeal for information, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Anyone with information about this incident should call detectives at the Sheriff’s Office at (772) 462-3230.
